Summer and Fall Fun

Museum sign

Hi friends,

We are all about making history fun, accessible, and enjoyable to you and the children in your life. With summer vacation winding down and fall just around the corner, you might be wondering ways to keep your child entertained without breaking the bank or clicking on the television. Here are a few fun ways to keep your child learning that can be fun for the whole family!

  • Museums are a terrific way to get your kids out of the house and learning something new. Whether it be a natural history museum, a museum of aviation or fine art, it’s a great activity that can last an entire day. Museums are also great places to continue learning about different topics we've covered in our kids magazine. Many museums offer free admissions to children on certain days or throughout the summer, so be sure to check with your local museum before planning your trip.

  • Depending where you live, Historic House Tours are available and allow you time to look around old historic homes and help give your child an idea of what it was like “back in the olden days”.

  • If you are planning an outdoor camping trip or spending the day at a national park, be sure to stop inside the visitors center. A lot of visitor centers are kid friendly and offer fun and exciting info about the founders of the park and the history of national parks.

  • Oftentimes a simple trip to the local library can offer endless hours of entertainment. My parents used to give my sisters and I projects where we had to do research on specific subject and create a big poster board that we presented to our family. Maybe give your kids some inspiration by having them look into cat mummification in ancient Egypt or fashion history. Having a specific topic to research each summer was always something I looked forward to as a kid and I’m sure you child would too!

  • Check out your local Historical Society or Community Center website to see any fun activities that might be going on in your area!

  • Have your kids interview family members and create a family tree over the summer. Have them create a list of questions for each family member and see how far back they can trace their ancestors!
  • Historic coloring books are a fun way to get your children learning without realizing it! Just look on Amazon for historic coloring books and you can find a coloring book for everything from Victorian houses, civil war uniforms, and even classic novels.

  • Check out if you have any historical reenactments in your area. It’s a fun and easy way to keep your kids entertained while also learning about history.

I hope this list helps give you a few fun ideas of ways to keep your little occupied over the summer and fall while still encouraging a spirit of learning. Please let us know if you have any other suggestions that you would like to add by writing to us at hello@honesthistory.co!

Cheers,
Brooke
